The Opioid Prevention Education Network through Michigan State University (OPEN-MSU) supports a team of AmeriCorps VISTA members as they serve with sites on projects that assist local efforts in Michigan communities to identify service gaps; improve communication within collaboratives and organizations; and, build the capacity of local efforts to create or expand opioid prevention, intervention, and treatment opportunities for communities to address the opioid abuse crisis.

OPEN-MSU AmeriCorps VISTA Program is hiring for the following positions:

1.     Community Assessment VISTA

Service Site: OPEN-MSU, East Lansing, MI

Work Location: East Lansing, MI or Remote

Service Term: October 24, 2022-October 23, 2023

Position Description: The AmeriCorps VISTA member will serve to research and complete community needs assessments for organizations that host OPEN-MSU VISTA members and to create and expand relationships with community partners of OPEN-MSU. The member will also partner with other serving members on community projects.

Member Living Allowance: $17,600

2.    Title: Family Food Specialist

Service Site: OPEN-MSU, East Lansing and Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, Sault Ste. Marie

Work Location: East Lansing, MI/Remote

Service Term: October 24, 2022-October 23, 2023

Position Description: The family food specialist VISTA member will support (1) the materials development and implementation for the foraging, growing, and physical activity Gikinawaabi lessons so that the curriculum includes a full section on health and nutrition and (2) the creation of food resource guides and food demonstrations. This work will be done in collaboration with community members (elders, parents, teachers, and home visitors), use photos, images, and stories from the current PhotoVoice Project, and be supported by community partner organizations. This VISTA will primarily work with Drs. Danielle Gartner and Chelsea Wentworth. Specific deliverables this VISTA will support or take the lead role on include: interpreting feedback from newly developed Gikinawaabi lesson and materials, developing 3 Gikinawaabi home visiting lessons, revising the 13 supplemental information sheets based on feedback, developing 13 locally relevant food resource guides, collaborating with ITC-MI’s efforts to develop 3 live food-based cooking demonstrations, expanding on the interactive training for Gikinawaabi, and supporting outreach using created materials at community events.

3.    Classroom Food Specialist

Service Site: OPEN-MSU, East Lansing Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, Sault Ste. Marie

Work Location: East Lansing, MI/Remote

Service Term: October 24, 2022-October 23, 2023

Position Description: The classroom food specialist VISTA member will support (1) the materials development and implementation for the head start classroom educational materials and lessons and (2) qualitative evaluation of project outcomes. This work will be done in collaboration with community members (elders, parents, teachers, and home visitors), use photos, images, and stories from the current PhotoVoice Project, and be supported by community partner organizations, particularly Tribal Head Start. This VISTA will primarily work with Drs. Jessica Barnes-Najor and Heather Howard. Specific deliverables this VISTA will support or take a lead role on include the creation and implementation of 13 Head Start classroom lessons, supporting development or editing of classroom materials and activities, creating videos to support classroom activities, expanding interactive training for Head Start teachers, and evaluating project activities using 4 focus groups.

4.    SEMAAC Program Coordinator

Service Site: Service Site: Michigan Public Health Institute/SEMAAC

Work Location: Remote

Service Term: October 24, 2022-October 23, 2023

Position Description: The VISTA serving with MPHI/SEMAAC would allow participation,collaboration, and partnership opportunities by working on the Statewide Recovery Friendly Workplace (RFW) initiative; assisting to build a stronger SEMAAC Coalition; and by assisting with the planning and coordination of the Annual Opioid and Substance Use Disorder Solutions Summit, new Recovery Friendly Workplace Symposium, and additional educational forums throughout the year.
