Opioid Settlement Technical Assistance Center
The Opioid Settlement Technical Assistance Center is a collaboration between the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan State University (MSU), University of Michigan (U-M), and Wayne State University (WSU). It provides technical assistance to counties receiving funds through opioid settlement dollars.
The settlements have mandated that the funds be used to support evidence-based programs for preventing or treating opioid-related harms. MSU, U-M, and WSU have formed a team of experts in various domains, such as treatment for opioid use disorders, recovery services, naloxone training and distribution, prevention, care linkage programs, opioid stewardship and disposal, harm reduction, training for health professionals and community-based human service organizations, services for pregnant and parenting individuals, and criminal-justice involved populations.
This team has a strong history of commitment to Michiganders. It is uniquely equipped to assist Michigan communities by assessing their specific needs and strengths and connecting them with appropriate technical and implementation assistance.
The immediate goal for Year 1 was to create the foundation and begin the implementation of a Technical Assistance Collaborative (TAC). During this first year, the team collaborated, coordinated, and developed the mechanisms, organization, and processes for delivering and implementing technical support.
The long-term goal of the TAC is to establish a technical support system wherein experts across MSU, U-M, and WSU provide communities with timely and unbiased community assessments, analysis with evidence-based recommendations, consultation on allowable uses of settlement funds, implementation support, and evaluation of efforts to prevent and treat opioid use concerns.
